The Day the Earth Stood Still

I recently watched the old version of The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951). There was one scene that really caught my attention, that I wanted to share with you. But first, here’s a brief summary:

The movie: (An alien lands and tells the people of Earth that they must live peacefully or be destroyed as a danger to other planets. The alien escapes from the government officials and lives anonymously among the people until he has let Earth know this message)

The scene: (The alien (Klaatu, who looks like a human), and a boy (Bobby) he has befriended are out around town, then they stop by the spaceship site, at the boy’s request. There they are met by a reporter, who is interviewing patrons surrounding the spaceship site)

Reporter: I see a gentlemen with his little boy, what do you think of the spaceship son?

Bobby: It’s the biggest spaceship I ever saw!

Reporter: (Laughs) and you sir, You mind telling us your name?

Klaatu: My name is Carpenter.

Reporter:  Would you care to say a few words Mr. Carpenter, I suppose you are just as scared as the rest of us.

Klaatu: In a different way, perhaps. I am fearful when I see people substituting fear for reason. In fact I’d—

Reporter: (cuts him off) Thank you, Mr. Carpenter.

Paper Boy: EXTRA, EXTRA SPACEMAN ELUDES POLICE! READ ALL ABOUT IT.

(The crowd then scurries over to get the latest news)

This scene reminded me of the life of Jesus. He is telling us his story, yet it’s not what we want to hear. Then man (the paper boy), gives us his news, we buy it quickly and gobble it up. Here we have Jesus giving us the real truth, the Good News- for free. And we don’t want to listen, but whatever man has to say, we will give it all ears and whatever time and money it costs.

Klaatu was able to stay under wraps for several days because he didn’t fit the ‘alien’ description, he didn’t have 3 eyes or tentacles like the paper reported. He looked just like them and walked among them.

Everyone loved Jesus when he arrived in Jerusalem, they thought he was going to conquer everything for them. But when they found out he wasn’t what they wanted- they killed him.

As you watch this scene unfold, you realize these people are so blind. They don’t know the truth- that the alien was right beside them.

We have the Truth. We have the Good News.

Imagine if these people knew, Klaatu/Carpenter was indeed the alien, yet continued their normal ways, dismissing what is really true. That’s even more repulsive and ignorant, right.

That’s how we are with the Bible. We know the Truth, but it doesn’t change our normal ways, and mostly we just dismiss it in our lives.

We have to step out of our normal routine, and get perspective. See our lives from another view- like this scene. It is abundantly clear what is happening. However in our daily lives, it happens so swiftly- it passes before our eyes without notice.

We pray that you can see the Truth for what it really is, and that you aren’t “as scared as the rest of (them)” just because that’s what the the world says. Step out of the darkness and see the Truth. Don’t buy the lies and ignore the Truth.

John 3:19-21

19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.

The video is 8 minutes or so, but the bulk of what I am referring to is here:

4:30 Bobby asking questions about the spaceship

5:10 The people mock him

5:25 The reporter starts with the questions

6:00 The scene is over
